How to prepare for SSB?

It’s better that you concentrate on developing your personality more than trying to mock the SSB process. So try to understand what the officers assess you expect from you and improve yourself in those areas. Going to a coaching institute might mostly have a negative impact on your performance as you might approach with preconceived notions which might not be pleasing the assessors. Always remember that coaching institute train you with ideal responses but SSB assessors always want a natural and right candidates.

What the assessors look for are the following qualities:

1. Effective Intelligence
2. Reasoning Ability
3. Organizing ability
4. Power of Expression
5. Social Adaptability
6. Co-operation
7. Sense of Responsibility
8. Initiative
9. Self Confidence
10. Quickness of Decision
11. Ability to influence
12. Liveliness
13. Determination
14. Courage
15. Stamina

Search more about these 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) in the internet and understand them. Put yourself in various situations of life and remember your actions in these situations. Compare those actions with what you understood as an OLQ. Your actions and reactions in different situations project your different qualities. Now understand what are your qualities and compare it with the respective OLQ. This way you can asses whether your personality reflects OLQ or not. If it doesn’t, see how you can improve upon them and do the same.

Having knowledge about your domain (your degree and your work) is very important. Even though they don’t want Einsteins, they don’t reject one and they’ll expect at least basic knowledge.
Knowing your surrounding and happenings around you is also important. So brush up your current affairs knowledge and general knowledge.

Having some amount of physical fitness is extremely important. Although we can’t generally say what exactly one should do, an average person should at least be able to do more than 20 push ups and 20 minutes running at a stretch.

Above all, stop being pessimistic. Being pessimistic is the easiest way to not clear SSB. Now this includes giving responses in TAT (Thematic Apperception Test)/SRT (Situation Reaction Test)/WAT (Word Association Test)/PPDT (Picture perception and Discussion Test). If there’s nothing negative in the picture (or situation in situation reaction test) and you bring a negativity and then telling that the main character resolves the negativity will result in rejection. Also, you don’t need to completely avoid the negativity in the picture and write unrelated things as it’ll give an impression of you being poor in reporting things. So be natural in your responses. And to give responses like this spontaneously, improve your personality and start being optimistic naturally.

Understand SSB is not a race. Co operate with your team. Being a team player is extremely important. Lead your team to success by helping your team. Don’t dominate them either. There’s only a hair line difference between being dominating and giving out your opinion boldly. Understand the difference and act accordingly (in GTOs)

Groom yourself better. Shave, dress up better and most importantly, don’t be stinky. Be nice to people. Understand basic application of Physics and Mathematics in real life. Practice these daily and you’ll automatically do it in SSB.

If you still feel that you need guidance, search the internet for such academies which will help you improve your personality and not train you in the SSB process typically like most of the academies do.
